How often do you do this?
When time allows
I am a busy guy, and if I have time on weekends, I am happy to take someone out. Since also care for my elderly mom on weekends, I can only do all-day events on alternating Saturdays.
What days do you take people out?
Normally, just Saturday or Sunday
Do you have an online calendar?
No, just email me
How can we get a hold of you?
Email. After I know you are a real person, that is genuinely interested, I will give you my cell
How many people will you take out?
That really depends on the activity
For slacklining, it could be a pretty big group
For something like kayaking, two would be the max
Learning something like surfing takes focus and I would not be effective with more than three people, at the most
For mountain biking, depending on the ride, I would be OK with a group up to about six or seven. I really prefer smaller groups because they are easier to handle
I have a limited amount of spare gear, but working on building it up
What is the no-sniveling rule?
Some of the stuff we do is hard. If you sign up for a 3,500’ (vertical) mountain bike ride, it’s going to hurt a bit
Sniveling or complaining is not fun for anyone. If you signed up for a hard ride, or hard day on the mountain, you need to expect there will be some pain - of course accompanied by the amazing wonder of the mountain and the joy of doing the sport.
What if I have injuries?
You need to talk to your doctor and use common sense before you do any aggressive sport
You have to know your limitations
Helicopter rides are expensive, so know your limits
What do you do for a living?
I’m in the enterprise software business – basically a geek
How much have you done this before?
I started this site in April 2014
I have been guiding and teaching people for many years
Are you an expert in all the sports you do?
No. I am better than most, but by no means an expert - most would call me “advanced” in the sports I practice
I am highly diversified in the sports that I love, so I have no time to become an expert in just one
Look at the videos if you want to judge my skill in some of the areas
I’m a pretty good teacher too
What other “volunteer” work do you do?
For the past 12 years or so, I have been a US Forest Service volunteer. I primarily do trail work, personally taking care of a few of epic trails in the Santa Ana mountains. I also do trail condition surveys, and patrols during bad weather.
Do you ever cancel or changed your mind on a trip?
Yes, sometimes I have something come up and have to reschedule. I am respectful of your time, and will always try to avoid this.
Sometimes people say they can do something that they are obviously not in shape for, or have the necessary skills. If I don’t think you can make it or it would be dangerous, I will modify or cancel.
What kind of people do you like to take out?
Good attitude
Adventurous
Reasonably good condition
Beginner or novice for most sports, or for others like mountain biking, intermediate/advanced is preferred
Kids (six and over) are OK too, as long as one parent is with them (or within view) and in control of them at all times
Have you ever been convicted of a crime?
Yes – I received a reckless water skiing ticket at about age 25, and a surf kayaking ticket at about age 45
I have paid my debt to society, please don’t hold my past against me :)
(but that’s it)
What if I want more information?
Email me
What if I just want some advice on a trip or activity?
I help lots of people put together hike/bike/surf/camping/hiking itineraries based on their skill and time of year and other factors. Just drop me an email.
